| Gold Medal Address 2011 - "Passing on Knowledge" |
Speaker(s):Allan Mann BSc, PhD, CEng, FREng, FIStruct E, MICE Our Institution was founded for members to share knowledge and learn from each other: that need remains today. Over the last half century there has been an explosion of structural information, more complex codes, phenomenal analytical power and an ability to understand the forces nature imposes on structures to a degree hereto unimaginable. But all that information has to be collated and disseminated to successive generations. What are the challenges and how do we do it? Watch the Gold Medal Address 2011 - "Passing on Knowledge" video |
| EEFIT Technical Evening Meeting: the Christchurch Earthquake of 22 February 2011 |

| SER Technical Bulletin No.6: Certification of the Design of Glazing Systems |
The talk introduces the Bulletin and describes the thinking behind it. It is recognised that glazing systems can vary from low risk installations typical of domestic properties to the complex facades found on prestige commercial properties. The Bulletin and talk seek to give guidance on what is covered by design standards, how to assess the risk and establish the level of checking required and how to manage this. The talk includes photos of typical examples and discusses what will be necessary to Certify the design of the installation.

| The Aesthetics of Engineering |
Speaker(s): Antoine Picon Engineers are usually reluctant to engage directly in aesthetics questions related to their work. The quest for beauty is nevertheless extremely present in engineering design. Using examples from the past as well as from the present, the lecture will discuss the various forms taken by such a quest, from the economy of material to structural expressionism. | Presidential Inaugural Address 2011 |
Speaker(s): Professor Roger Plank, PhD, BSc(Eng), CEng, FIStructE, MICE - Sheffield University In his address Roger will be focusing on the theme of 'Adding Value'. He will consider this topic under two specific strands:
Additionally Roger will consider the growing opportunities of structural engineers to provide value adding expertise beyond their traditional core activities. Watch the Presidential Inaugural Address 2011 video |
| IABSE Milne Medal Lecture 2010 |
Speaker(s): Chris Wise This talk will not be a beauty parade of past personal glories. Instead, in the light of today’s designerly challenges, Chris Wise will use the significance of the Milne Medal lecture to propose how the structural engineering design community might adapt its culture to take some simple practical actions. In the global context of our work, he will compare and contrast progress in structural engineering with the rapid pace of technological advance in other fields, and suggest how the good structural designer should take a lead in reducing resource-depletion and increasing sustainability. All of which would be no good if it saddled the world with what one eminent civil engineer has called "lumpy objects", so an intrinsic part of the talk will be an investigation of how the search for engineering sustainability can lead to a high engineering aesthetic. | Evening Technical Meeting - Heron Tower |
Speaker(s):Dr Mark Richards Mr Nick Gillespie Heron Tower is a 47 storey above ground, three levels below ground, office building in the City of London. Located on Bishopsgate near Liverpool Street train station it accompanies Swiss Re and Tower 42 as landmarks on the London city horizon. It is part of a collection of new generation tall buildings that will change the appearance of the City in coming years and will be completed in February 2011. The presentation will focus on the development of the structural design that emerged from the challenges specific to the site combined with the aspirations of the client and architect. The strategy assembled for the structural engineering, and the strong reliance on careful engineering logic will be discussed. Watch the Evening Technical Meeting - Heron Tower video |
| Precast Concrete Hyperbolic Paraboloid Roof Shells |
Speaker(s):Martin Ashmead – CEng, FIStructE, FICE, MRICS Each aspect will be explained in such a manner as to be understood by all attendees, irrespective of age, education or discipline. Structural aspects will be discussed and explained in physical and not too much mathematical terms. Calculators and mathematical knowledge can be left at home. Relevance to the 21st Century and reason for presentation: As there are few people alive with comprehensive knowledge of this form of construction and little, if any, archived information, this presentation will prove invaluable to those appointed to advise about such roofs in the future.
